Chinese New Year!
Chinese New Year is on the 25th of January this year. This is the year of the ‘rat’ according to the Chinese calendar. In Marmalade, we listened to the story of the Jade Emperor to help us understand why the Chinese name the years after animals.
We learnt that the Emperor decided to have a race to help keep track of the years as they go by. There were 12 animals in the race. They were tiger, rabbit, pig, rat, ox, dragon, horse, monkey, snake, dog, goat and the rooster! The rat won because he jumped off the ox’s back. The rat was so excited that he forgot to wake the cat up for the race. The years were named after these 12 animals.
We listened to Chinese songs, ate some Chinese food for lunch and our school hall was decorated with Chinese lanterns. We listened to a lot of Chinese stories and made Chinese crafts. Our favourite was the Chinese colouring pages!
