This week, as part of Science Week, Sky have been investigating which material would make the best thermal insulator. We learned that explorers and scientists in the Antarctic may face very cold temperatures – a recently recording of temperature from a satellite was -98°C! The children wrapped cups in different materials and then we poured the same amount of warm water into each cup. We used an un-insulated cup as a control measure. We predicted which material would keep the water the warmest. We then measured the temperature of each cup of water every five minutes. We discovered that the cups wrapped in bubble wrap and fleece were the best insulated.
