… it’s a HOT AIR BALLOON!
Hello Magnificent Marmalade Minions!
I hope you are all enjoying our Fabulous Flight topic! I have seen some amazing rockets, moons and facts about Neil Armstrong. Well done Minions!
We’ll be looking at something colourful and interesting this week. Yes, you guessed right… HOT AIR BALLOONS!
A hot air balloon is a type of aircraft. It is lifted by heating the air inside the balloon, usually with fire.
History
Hot air balloons are one of the oldest flying machines- they existed way before aeroplanes! The use of hot air to make objects fly was first discovered in Ancient China. The Chinese used flying paper lanterns to send signals.
However, the first hot air balloon to carry a person was made by the Montgolfier brothers in France. On 19 September 1783, they demonstrated their invention for the King and Queen at the French court in Paris.
The passengers were a sheep, a duck and a rooster and they flew for 8 minutes. How interesting!
The first flight carrying a person was on 15 October 1783. It carried Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier.

Creative Activity:
Design you own hot air balloon using your knowledge of materials. What sort of material would be suitable for a hot air balloon and why? Discuss this with your adult. Once you have decided on your material, get busy! The more colourful, the better!

Writing Activity:
Imagine you are going on a special adventure. You are going to travel to your destination by hot air balloon. It can be a real or imaginative destination. Where would you like to go? Why would you like to go there? What will you pack? Who will you take?
– Remember to write a title, for example- ‘Off to unicorn land in my hot air balloon‘ or ‘Mrs O and the giant hot air balloon‘.
– I would love to see good use of capital letters and punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks).
– I am also looking out for excellent use of adjectives and conjunctions.
– You may use this template for your writing.
Enjoy and have a fantastic week!

Jamie did his least favourite task today and created the story with some help. We forgot to make it about Jamie’s adventure so tried to add it in.
WOW! This is simply amazing! You persevered through your least favourite task and you are getting better at writing. Brilliant use of story language and conjunctions!
I tried to get him to do the work neatly but it didn’t quite work out that way.
Haha! Let’s pick our battles here. You got him to write and that’s a huge step in the right direction. Well done super star! I have enjoyed reading this. Interesting characters too -crocodiles!
Tommy loves doing little science experiments. We found a very simple experiment to demonstrate what happens when you make air warm and then when you cool it down. We used an empty bottle, a balloon, a bowl of hot water and a bowl of ice cold water. This was great to help understand how a hot air balloon works.
Well done! I am glad you enjoyed it.
After we failed trying to make a hot air balloon that actually flew using candles foil and a plastic bag it’s fair to say we took the easy route in making this 😊
I love it! Boys, I can tell you enjoyed it. Little brother made one too! Yay! A well deserved positive for you!
Tommy’s dinosaur balloon. He’s taking Chase and Ryder on an adventure instead of the characters from his story.
What a lovely hot air balloon! Never mind one that flies! Good job! I bet Chase and Ryder would love this adventure!
