Hello Magnificent Marmalade Minions!
How are you all doing? Hope you all had a lovely time in the sun last week. Wasn’t the weather beautiful? What did you get up to? I would love to know. I still miss you all and I look forward to seeing you soon.
This week, we would be learning about money! What currency do we use in England? If you said pound (sterling) or pence, you are correct! The symbol for the British pound is ‘£’ and for pence or penny, we simple write a lower case ‘p’. Can you name some of the currencies used in other parts of the world? Discuss this with your adult.
Our main learning objective this week is:
- to recognise and know the value of different denominations of coins and notes.
Some of the key vocabulary we would be using this week include: money, pounds, pence, penny, notes, coins, price, count, cost, total, how much?, pay, spend, spent, compare, difference, £, p, greater than, more than, less than, equal.

Your PowerPoint for this week: Year 1 PowerPoint Money Week 9
Remember to choose worksheets based on our Minion’s understanding of the concept. Children may complete only one page of each activity.
Activity 1: Recognise coins
Answers for activity 1
Activity 2: Recognise notes
Answers for activity 2
Activity 3: Matching coins and notes
Activity 4: Counting coins – This is a great opportunity to recap counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
Activity 5: Order coins and notes
Please remember that children do not need to attempt all three levels of the worksheets- 1, 2 or 3 stars. Choose the level suitable for your child or the level above if they are up for a challenge or make it a ‘Chilli Challenge‘ where children choose their own task from mild (1 star), hot (2 stars) or fiery (3 stars).
I cannot wait to see your fantastic work in the comment section below.
The worksheets are an added resource. You can make this lesson as practical as possible by getting children to identify and order real cons and notes.

Activity 5
You breezed through these activities and I can tell you enjoyed learning about money. You might need to help mum and dad with totting up the amounts on their shopping list! Keep engaging in practical activities. Excellent job!
Harrison struggled with this to start with. But slowly got the hang of the money towards the end. Think hes really starting to miss being in the class room. His attension span is the same as a gold fish. So slow and steady for us at the moment.
Bless him. It has been so long and I think they miss the routine now. Let’s not overwhelm him with these tasks and just ensure that we engage him in activities that he enjoys. His mental health and well being is all that matters. I would give you a call when next I am in school. My regards to him.
