As one of our enrichment activities in Year 4, we have been learning about the technique of Batik to produce patterns on fabric. Batik is an art and craft that is popular around the world. It originated from Indonesia and uses wax-resist dyes applied to cloth. When the wax is removed, the dye leaves a pattern behind on the fabric.
First, we practised drawing some Anglo-Saxon patterns in our sketch books. We then chose one of our patterns and recreated it on paper, making it as dark as we could so that it could be seen underneath the fabric. We made a paste from flour and water and used a syringe to apply the pattern to the fabric.
Once the paste had dried, we covered the cloth with fabric paint and left it to dry.
Finally, once the paint was dry, we removed the paste by scratching it off and the pattern was left behind on the fabric. Take a look at our creations – we were really pleased with them!
