Hi Year 6,
We hope you are well and staying safe. We all miss you greatly and cannot wait to see you again. Your task this week, in addition to your online activities and CGP books, is to put on your design and technology hats and become inventors!
Choose one (or all four) of the challenges below. You are to plan, build, test and evaluate a structure built from items around your home. When evaluating your product, write down why it worked/why it didn’t and what you would do differently. You can also re-build your structure with improvements to make it even stronger if it did not work the first time! If you do not have the items listed, you may use an alternative.
- Can you design and build a dry spaghetti/pasta bridge that’s strong enough to have a toy car travel across it?
- Can you design and build a boat from cardboard that’s strong enough to float, even with weight on board?
- Can you design and build a wind turbine from sticks/straws that can spin?
- Can you design and build an aeroplane out of paper or card that can fly at least two meters? (Not your average paper aeroplane!)
Once complete, take a picture of your plan and structure and send it to us; you can even record yourself testing out the finished product! We cannot wait to see your inventions – have fun!

Lots of love and big hugs,

Lily made a boat out of cardboard. She taped it with brown tape to waterproof it, straws for a mast and stones wrapped in foil to stop them moving. She tested it in the paddling pool and it floated.
A great looking boat Lily! Hope you had fun designing and making it.
A wonderful boat, Lily! Well done!
