Hello Magnificent Marmalade Minions!
I was really pleased with how creative we were with our tasks on fractions last week. Remember, you can make this topic as practical as you choose and share some of your ideas with us all. As you discuss with your adult this week, I would like you to focus on using the accurate vocabulary such as fraction(s), part, whole, half and quarters.
Last week, we took a deep dive into the world of halves which is sharing into two equal parts. This week, we would focus more on quarters which is sharing into four equal parts. The key word here is equal. When we share into fractions, the parts must be equal
Let’s start our this week’s session with our PowerPoint: Year 1 PowerPoint Week 5 Fractions
Activity 2: Recognising a quarter Select the sheets to print based on our Minion’s understanding of the concept. Children may complete only one page of this activity.
Activity 3: Find a quarter Again, select the sheets to print based on our Minion’s understanding of the concept. Children may complete only one page of this activity.
GAMES: Click here for your game this week. It is quite a challenge as it is finding halves of numbers. It can also be used to recap our learning on ‘doubles’.
I have also assigned some fraction games on Purple Mash.
Remember that for worksheets, children do not need to attempt all three levels- 1, 2 or 3 stars. Choose the level suitable for your child or the level above if they are up for a challenge. Otherwise, make it a ‘Chilli Challenge‘ where children choose their own task from mild (1 star), hot (2 stars) or fiery (3 stars).
Also remember that you can now share your work in the comment section below rather than the home learning email.
Enjoy!

What resource did you use to support your learning? Counters, chocolate buttons or raisins? Way to go champ!
We used coins to work out quarters of larger numbers but she managed to do some in her head by halving a half.

Worksheets colouring quaters
This was quite tricky but you cracked it. You tried hard to share the irregular shapes into quarters and did a good job at it.
One of the worksheets Jamie had to find a quarter of ten he found that challenging and needed my help so we tried to work it out using wax melts 😊 I split them in half to work it out that way.
Wax melts! What a clever idea. I am glad you’ve used practical resources to support your learning.
