Governing Board

Dear Parents and Carers,

On behalf of the Governing Board, we would like to welcome you to our school website and provide you with an insight into the role of the Governing Board.

Our Governing Board is made up of 11 governors from a variety of backgrounds and with a range of different skills all of whom work hard to support the Headteacher, staff and pupils.

As a Governing Board we work with the school to ensure that it delivers good quality education and together with the Headteacher, who is responsible for day-to-day management of the school, we set the school’s aims and policies.

There are different types of governors:

  • Parent Governors – Selected by the parents and carers of pupils at the school.
  • Staff Governors – Selected by the staff employed at the school.
  • Local Authority Governors – Appointed by the Local Authority.
  • Co-Opted Governors – Appointed by the Governing Board with particular skills or experience.

Our Key Roles are:

  • Setting the strategic direction for the school.
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils and the performance management of staff.
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school, making sure its money is well spent and ensuring financial accountability and sustainability.

Other duties include:

  • Determining how the school’s budget is spent including Pupil Premium/Sports Premium
  • Appointing and dismissing staff
  • Hearing appeals and grievances
  • Setting standards for pupils’ behaviour and discipline
  • Making sure school buildings are welcoming and safe
  • Monitoring the school’s aims and policies  
  • Individual governors also take a lead role on behalf of the Governing Board in areas including Health and Safety, Pupil Premium, Child Protection and Safeguarding, Attendance and Special Educational Needs. All governors report back on their visits to school at Full Governing Board meetings.
  • In addition to attending meetings, governors visit the school regularly attending special events, meeting with staff and pupils and monitoring progress.           
  • Each governor is allocated a year group and regularly visit.                        
  • We monitor progress in a variety of ways including: Presentations from subject leaders; Learning Walks; Book looks, attending Pupil Progress meetings and interviews with pupils. We also receive reports from the Head Teacher and other leaders, the Local Authority Adviser, Outside Agencies and the Leadership Team.

Below is a list of Governors and their responsibilities. If you wish to contact the Chair of Governors or any member of the Governing Board, please do so through the school office. Any concerns related to the day to day management of the school, including teaching and learning and pupil discipline must always be referred directly to the Headteacher.
