In Reception, we have learned all about ‘habitats’ and ‘hibernation’. We discussed what we think it meant before doing some learning to understand what it actually means. We learned about various animals who hibernate during the Winter months to survive. We also looked at what animals do during Autumn to prepare for hibernation, such as: eat lots of food and find a warm, dry, safe place to hibernate. We discussed the reasons for certain animals needing to hibernated such as: it being too cold to survive and food being scarce. One of us asked Miss Clulow if we could help animals hibernate and she thought that it was a fantastic idea! Because of this, we have been creating Hedgehog boxes to put outside for hedgehogs to use to hibernate. To do this we followed the steps below:
  1. Draw a plan of what our hedgehog home will look like (including labelling of the plan).
  2. Collect the materials we would need (a box, scissors, paper shredding and dry leaves).
  3. Cut a hole where the entrance will be for the hedgehog.
  4. Lay a layer of paper shredding.
  5. Add a layer of dry leaves on top to keep the hedgehog warm.
  6. Put it outside in a covered area to avoid the rain.

Now you have your complete hedgehog box! We cannot wait to keep on creating! Please ask us and speak to us about hibernation and habitats. We would love to tell you more!
